Far Western Championships–the results are in!!

Just getting going after last week’s Championship in Northern California. Congratulations to our 5 athletes! Abby Bertics, Bennett Bugelli, Michael Cohn, Reef Guerard, and Zachary Wallace! This is the largest group we’ve taken to the meet. The meet featured over 1400 swimmers from around the country. Our group did a great job of handling the crowds, weather, etc. Just imagine, 1400 swimmers, 24 lanes to warmup in. Swimming World TV was there filming finals each day! 6 of Michaels swims are there. I’ve included links to two of them. Notice the difference in the weather between the 1st swim of the meet and the last….

Some highlights…

Our team of 5 swimmers finished in 42nd place with 27 points (only top 8 finishers score points).

Michael Cohn finished 5th in the High Point competition with 27 points.

24 splashes, 13 Best times!
2 improved USA Swimming standards (Abby with a AAA time in the 50 fly; Bennett with a AA time in the 100 breast)
1 new Far Western standard (Bennett swam a short course qualifying time in the 100 breast--had qualified with long course)
1 new unofficial Zone Championship qualifying time--swimmers can only qualify with long course times--(Bennett in the 100 breast)
14 team records (Michael – 10; Abby – 2; Bennett - 2)

Grand Prix in Long Beach & Novice Meet in Mission Valley, Jan 15–18!!!

WSST had a great showing this weekend! Not only at the Grand Prix meet in Long Beach, but also at the Novice meet at the Mission Valley YMCA! Swimmers competing at all levels! Outstanding!

Here’s the email I received from Kayla about the Novice meet:

The meet went really well! Some confusion and kinks at the beginning but it worked out really well! The kids received a ribbon right after they swam with their time on it. Everyone swam well, no upsets! Biggest surprise was Cary! He really impressed me with his speed and stroke technique. Great swim! Many of the swimmers it was their first meet, hopefully they are encouraged to go to more!

Kayla

Ben Weston and Michael Cohn competed at the Grand Prix in Long Beach. Amazing meet! Michael swam 4 events recording 3 best times, 5 team records, a new AAA time in the 100 back, etc. but several Olympians were also competing! I video taped some of the swims and will get those on my computer as soon as I can. Swim Network was also doing a live webcast! Check out their website for race videos, interviews, recaps, etc. swimnetwork.com.

Michael Phelps and Kara Lynn Joyce were staying at our hotel (or were we staying at theirs?). Anthony Bookheimer, Zachary and Dominick Wallace came and watched on Saturday! Jason Lezak autographs everywhere!

Meet results for Michael and Ben are posted on our Team Stats website.
